A 3[prime or minute]-methylenephosphonate modified diribonucleotide is highly resistant to phosphodiesterase degradation and most remarkably it is highly resistant towards the action of RNase A, despite the fact that both the vicinal 2[prime or minute]-hydroxy nucleophile and the 5[prime or minute]-oxyanion leaving group are intact.
