Selective hydrogenolysis of aryl and aliphatic cyanides under just 1 bar of hydrogen gas by using a nickel catalyst has been developed. This protocol has been applied in the aryl cyanide directed functionalization reaction and [small alpha]-substitution of benzyl cyanides.
